What are the common plastics and their uses?
1. Polyester (PES) – fibers, textiles.
2. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) – carbonated beverage bottles, peanut butter jars, plastic film, microwave packaging.
3. Polyethylene (PE) - Wide range of inexpensive uses including supermarket bags, plastic bottles.
4. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) – Detergent bottles, milk jugs and molded plastic boxes.
5. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) – plumbing and gutters, shower curtains, window frames, floors.
6. Polyvinylidene Chloride (PVDC) (Saran) – Food Packaging.
7. Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) – Outdoor furniture, siding, floor tiles, shower curtains, clamshell packaging.
8. Polypropylene (PP) – bottle caps, straws, yogurt containers, electrical appliances, car fenders (bumpers), plastic pressure piping systems.
9. Polystyrene (PS) – Packaging Foam/"Peanuts", Food Containers, Plastic Cutlery, Disposable Cups, Plates, Cutlery, CDs and Cassettes.
10. High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)-: Refrigerator lining, food packaging, vending machine cups.
11. Polyamide (PA) (Nylon) - fibers, toothbrush bristles, tubing, fishing line, low-strength machine parts: car engine parts or gun mounts under the hood.
12. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) – Electronic equipment enclosures (eg, computer monitors, printers, keyboards), drain pipes.
13. Polyethylene/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (PE/ABS) – A smooth blend of PE and ABS for low load dry bearings.
14. Polycarbonate (PC) – Discs, glasses, riot shields, security windows, traffic lights, lenses.
15. Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (PC/ABS) – A blend of PC and ABS that results in a stronger plastic. It is used for interior and exterior parts of automobiles and mobile phone bodies.
16. Polyurethane (PU) – Cushioning foam, insulating foam, surface coatings, printing rollers (currently the 6th or 7th most commonly used plastic material, such as the most commonly used plastic in automobiles).
